Notifications
The bell icon in the top bar: things that happened that concern you — a ticket assigned to you, a reply on something you are following, and the like — with a count of what you have not yet looked at.
When you would use this: to catch up on what changed since you last looked, without checking every list in turn.
Steps: open the bell to see recent notifications. Opening the panel does not mark anything read — only clicking into a notification does, which also takes you to the thing it is about. Use "Mark all read" to clear the count without opening each one.
What each option means: the count shows "0" when there is nothing waiting, and caps at "99+" rather than growing without bound. The list refreshes on its own; you do not need to reload the page.
Choosing what you are told about: go to Setup and then Notifications to switch off any type you do not want to see in the app. Everything is on by default, and a new type added later starts on for you too, so you only ever have to turn things off, never remember to turn them back on.
What happens next: nothing here is ever emailed on its own — it is the in-app list. Whether you also get an email for the same event is a separate setting your firm controls.
When it refuses: if the bell never shows a count you expect, check you have not switched that type off in Setup → Notifications.
