Contract types
The categories your contracts are filed under — retainer, statement of work, framework agreement, whatever your firm calls them.
When you would use this: to keep the Contracts screen's charts and filters meaningful, by giving every agreement a consistent label.
What a type does, and does not, do: it is a label, a filter, and one axis of the "contracts by type" charts on the Contracts screen — nothing in the product behaves differently because of which type a contract carries. A type that changed behaviour would be a rule hidden in a lookup table, which is exactly what this screen deliberately is not.
Adding, renaming or reordering one: give it a name and, optionally, a description; the order set here is the order offered when drafting a contract.
Retiring one: mark a type inactive rather than deleting it if contracts are already filed under it — a type with contracts against it refuses deletion outright, and retiring keeps every contract that already used it exactly as it was, just no longer offered on a new one.
A narrower view: seeing the list needs only the same permission reading contracts themselves does; adding, renaming or retiring a type needs the further permission that writing a contract does.
When it refuses: "delete" is refused with a plain reason — a type with contracts against it — retire it instead. "Contracts are not available to your role" means you cannot read contracts at all — ask an Owner or Admin.
