Goals Tracking
A target and the progress towards it, read from the firm's own records — nobody ever updates a goal's progress by hand.
When you would use this: to track a target for yourself, for a colleague, or for the whole firm, against a metric the product already measures.
Every signed-in member of staff reaches this screen: you see your own goals and every firm-wide one (one set with nobody named as its subject) whatever your role; a further permission additionally shows you goals set for other named people. Without the permission to see money across the firm, a money-metric goal (invoiced amount, payments received, expenses total) is shown to you only when you are its own subject — "we are at 40% of £400,000" would otherwise tell you the firm's revenue whether or not the goal was ever yours to see.
The metrics on offer: invoiced amount, payments received, new customers, leads converted, billable hours, expenses total, contracts started (for one contract type you choose) and estimates converted. Each one has its own unit — money, hours, or a plain count — and the Target field is always in that unit; a money target you type is refused if it would round to a fraction of a penny.
Direction: most metrics ask you to reach at least a number; expenses total is the one built to ask you to stay under one instead — a ceiling is only counted as achieved once its period has actually closed under it, never on day one just because zero is under the ceiling.
Two views: List, the goals themselves with their own Progress column; and Insights, a single chart of how many goals sit in each state.
States: In progress, Achieved, Missed (an "at least" goal whose period closed without reaching its target), and Breached (a "stay under" goal that has already gone over its ceiling before its period has even closed).
Adding one: a subject (a named colleague, or leave it for the whole firm), a metric, a direction, a target, a currency where the metric is money, a contract type where the metric needs one, and a start and end date.
"See this in the report": most goals link straight through to the report screen that backs their number, filtered to the goal's own period — new customers has no such link yet, because there is no date-filtered customer report to send it to.
Editing or deleting one: needs the permission to write goals; deleting a goal does not touch the invoices, payments or other records it was counting — only the goal itself disappears.
When it refuses: "Goals are not available here" means you are signed in on the wrong side of the product; "Goals are not available to your role" (rare — every staff role normally reaches this) means ask an Owner or Admin. "Creating goals is not available to your role" on New goal means you can read goals but not write one.
