Profitability

Which projects and clients make money: what they were invoiced, less what the work cost in staff time, less what was spent on them.

When you would use this: to find the retainer that quietly loses money, or to price the next project from what the last one really cost.

Revenue is invoices issued in the range, excluding tax, less credit notes issued in the range. Draft and cancelled invoices are not counted.

Staff cost is every hour logged in the range at the cost per hour of the person who logged it, set on their page under Setup → Staff. The rate is saved on each entry when it is logged, so a pay rise changes future margins, not past ones. Hours logged by someone with no cost set are shown as uncosted beside the figure — never counted as free.

Expenses are those dated in the range, net of tax: by project when attached to one, by client when charged to the client or one of their projects.

By project or by client: the switch at the top. By project counts only what is attached to a project; by client counts everything for that customer.

Currencies are never converted: staff cost is in your firm's currency, so a project invoiced in another currency shows its figures side by side and "Not comparable" in place of a margin.

Least profitable first: the rows that need a decision lead the table.

When it refuses: "Profitability is not available to your role" — the same permission as the Sales report; ask an Owner or Admin.
